The Voice of the Anglo-Saxons
Old English, or Englisc, was the language spoken in England by the Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, and Jutes) from the mid-5th century until the Norman Conquest of 1066. It is the language of legendary epics like Beowulf and the historical annals of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
Though it may look and sound entirely foreign at first, Old English is the direct parent of modern English. In fact, many of the most common words we use every single day—words like friend, house, water, and father—descend directly from Old English.
